La Francais - My Favourite Things

For the past few years, I've considered myself something of a Francophile. I guess this started when Arsene Wenger became the manager of Arsenal and began his French Revolution. Thierry Henry is, of course, the closest that a man like me will get to a God.

My love for France was properly consumated, however, when my parents moved out there and bought their "little" cottage and an acre of land in Normandy last year:

I go out there every couple or three months or so; next time is in 19 days (yippee!). One of the really great things about France is the quality of the females. Go to any hypermarket and stand there and just look. Most of the females you see will be beautiful; mingers are rare. Of course, in an English supermarket, that ratio is reversed. And that's in the South-East. I suspect it's even worse up North!

Another cool thing is côte de porc. This is a snack available at any street market (at least in Normandy) and consists of a big grilled pork chop in a baguette replete with tons of hot mustard. It's so nice that my mouth waters just to think of it.

One thing I dislike about France is the language. French has a truely silly system of changing its verb forms depending on the tense and person of the sentence. It's dreadful and I doubt I will ever become fluent in the language.

Nonetheless, I do love France. Probably wouldn't want to live there, being that I'm a good old-fashioned Kentish boy who is content to live in London but who knows? Perhaps in 15 or 20 years...

The roads

You alway hear about how awful it is to drive in France, mainly because of the French, but I've always found it to be a far more relaxed experience than driving in the UK.

(Apart from the time Smegger took me into Paris, and despite me wanting to park on the outskirts and catch the Metro in,  somehow ended up whirling round the Place de la Concord, but that's another story)

I just loooove those long straight roads, mile after mile, lined with hundreds of trees (although they seem to be under threat - see here)

Now this is going to sound a bit weird, but I also like these:

If you can't make it out, that's a black human silhouette with blood pouring from its head. (Nice)

Whereas in the UK we have a crass sign that just states '7 killed on this road last year', in France you get one of these wherever someone died on the road. It certainly makes you pay attention to your driving.

Morbid yes, but devastatingly effective.

Anyway, on a lighter note, my Mum is planning to retire over there, so hopefully I'll get to see a lot more of France in a few years time... Of course, if she doesn't make sure she has a spare room or two, there's going to be some SERIOUS trouble!
